An ordinary 11-year-old boy, who lives a miserable life, serving as a sort of slave for his aunt and uncle discovers that he is actually a wizard. Eventually he is invited to attend Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. Hagrid the grounds keeper of Hogwarts picks up Harry and introduces him to a life that he and the viewers never knew existed. Harry is well known by the characters in the mythical world, because of an incident which occured when he was a baby. This makes it easier for Harry to adapt to his new lifestyle, and make friends. As the story progresses Harry learns about what really happened to his parents, that the wizarding world isnt as safe as it seems, and that wizards cant be trusted.
2) Characters
Harry Potter: He is the protagonist in the story. At the beginning of the film Harry is portrayed as being weak and timid, but gradually he turns into a heroic powerful wizard. Harry has brown hair blue eyes and wears glasses. The scar on his forehead represents all of the trouble which played out at his birth, between Voldamort an evil wizard and Harrys parents. The scar is very significant to Harrys character. It connects to all of the magical happenings in all of the Harry Potter films.
Hermione Granger: Hermione is presented as a goody-two-shoes at the start of the film. She studied a lot, and bossed people around which made her an unlikeable character. However as the movie progresses we see another side to Hermione. She becomes closer to Harry and Ron as they discover many secrets at Hogwarts, which they sort to solve. She eventually learns the value of friendship, and becomes a friendly and loving character.
Ron Weasley : Ron is well known for being apart of the red head Weasley broad. He is a shy and modest character, who is Harry first friend at Hogwarts. Ron and Harry grow closer as Ron helps Harry throughout there quest to get the Philosopher's Stone. An example of this was Rons determination to beat the monstorous chess Queen. He put his life on the line for Harry, this showed how strong there friendship was and how Ron is a generous and kind character. As the movie ends Ron becomes known for his heroic acts rather than his familys wizard background.
Hagrid: Hagrid is a giant who works at Hogwarts as a grounds keeper. He is known for rescuing Harry from his horrible beginning, and introducing him to the magical life of Hogwarts. Rubeus Hagrid is a kind hearted character who cares a lot for Harry. This is shown at the end of the film when he sheds a tear, as he watches Harrys train leave the station as Harry heads back to his horrible life with the Dursleys.
Albus Dumbledore: A famous wizard who is the head of Hogwarts. Although Dumbledore is famous, he doesnt act like it. He is a very humble character. Most of the Professors at Hogwarts, are strict with the rules, and obsess over them, but Dumbledore doesn't. He respects the rules but doesnt over exaggerate them. He has a lot of wisdom and knowlege, making him seem like the perfect character. Some suggest Dumbledore may of set up the quest of the Philosophers stone so Harry could prove himself as a worthy hero.
Voldemort: Voldemort was once a great wizard but magic overtook him turning him into an evil character. When Harry was just a baby, Voldemort killed Harry's parents leaving Harry with a lightning shaped scar on his forehead. Harry wants revenge. However Voldemort is determined to avert death, so he sorts to find the Philsophers Stone, which will make him live an eternal life. Harry gets the Philosopher's stone before Voldemort does so Voldemort wants to kill Harry. It will be difficult for Voldemort to do this as he cant understand love, and thus cannot touch Harry’s body. Harrys body still bears the traces of Harry’s mother’s love for her son, protecting him from Voldemort. This makes Harrys quest to kill Voldemort sound easy but Voldemort is a powerful wizard, who controls Harrys life. Harry willl have to work hard to defeat the evil wizard once it for all.
3) Themes
Family:
Harry misses his parents, who he never knew because of Voldemort who killed his parents when Harry was just a baby. Harry was given to his aunt and uncle, a family known as the Dursleys. The Dursleys feed, clothed and sheltered Harry, but they didn't give him love which everyone needs. They didn't treat Harry as apart of there family, they treated him like he was there slave. This made Harrys childhood miserable, however this changed when Harry went to Hogwarts. At Hogwarts students and faculty cared for him, so Hogwarts became his new chosen family.
Friendship:
Harry developed many friendships as soon as he started at Hogwarts. His close friendships with both Hermione and Ron allowed Harry to adapt with his new lifestyle. Without Hermione and Ron i dont think that Harry would of been able to get the Philosophers Stone. Hermione was the one who found out about the stone in the first place and without Rons courage in the chess match allowed Harry to continue his quest. Harrys friendships made him accomplish more than what he would have if he was on his own.
Supernatural:
Many supernatural happenings take place in the film. There are magic trains, magic candles, magic animals and creatures. A boarding school sounds like an ordinary place but Hogwarts isnt, its a place filled with extraordinary magic. The strangest events happen at Hogwarts, but they are concered normal in the magical world. Examples include mail coming hrough by an owl, students learning how to transform matches into needles, and Harry finding an invisibility cloak under his bed. These events would just be typical happenings at Hogwarts.
